I had been working hard these last couple of days on Dizzy Spells. The spark from the Tapastic.com series has given me a new reason to continue the run. Along with writer Adam Cogan, I will focus my efforts in making Dizzy Spells a complete trade paperback by the end of May. This will then be a Kickstarter to fund print cost hopefully in June. The good news is I don’t have to rush on it. Adam and I plan on also pushing Sword Theory by the end of the year as issue one is already completed and issue two is already written.
I added some page layouts to show my process of how I conceptualize a page.
Lately I’ve been looking to take my work to another level. I met with one of my best friends SKAM2? and he introduced me to one of his friends Jeff Dekal who works for Marvel as a cover artist. Jeff is a painter and a badass one to boot. His work in “real” work. As an artist you have to sometimes surround yourself around other artist to what levels you can take your own work. So, I tried something different…One night while doing another one of my many drawing exercises I do to keep relevant in my craft, I realized something. I love to just draw and sometimes it does not have to be comic related.
I was extremely tired when I drew this but it just flowed. As I dreamed that night, I had the idea of making a project for the new year to focus on two regions Africa (the continent) and the Caribbeans (Bahamas, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Cuba).
Why those places? Just because. 😜 Born and raised in Miami, I feel like I am giving something back. Stay tune for more.
Ok, this is a small treat for those fellow artist out there who want to shoot ideas around to each other. I drew this picture on a 4″ x 6″ sheet of note paper. I really fell in love with it as I gave more and more detail to the work.Then I realized that it’s on note paper and I would have to do this all over again in the process of tracing or light-boxing or whatever. This may not happen as often as I would like because I draw comics with panels that have a range of backgrounds, props, and etc. But for those single shots like this, it was hard for me to stop at ‘just’ a layout. So what to do?
I am slowly breaking the rules of traditional comic production. The 11×17 Bristol board, blue line layout, traditional workflow is probably how we all started out. But I will see promise in even a sketch on a napkin and try my best to keep it alive. With scanning and digital media, this is possible. Check out this rework based off a scan of the original sketch.
With erase tool and a brush with the same color, I kept the image alive with very little redrawing.
By the way, this is a page in my up coming project “Chasing Shadows”.
My family is coming over for the holidays and it’s time for my to finish this in the final stretch. I have the featured panel to draw with one additional. Then I have to finish rendering the rest of the issue which is about 5 panels or so.
A few people asked why the video I made of me working on this project was not on my site and I really did not have an answer. I will post the video soon in a new section of the site labeled “Videos”.
This story is still in the early phases but everyone I show the pages to love them. So why aren’t the pages on the site yet? Well, you just have to wait. OSN is near completion of the first half of volume one. Writer and co creator Marcell Dupree and I plan on having issue one done by the end of February 2017. Until then, I’ll try to sneak a few pages or to you ;-).
